Humminbird Fish Finder not working properly?

I bought a boat with a Humminbird fishfinder/sounder but it is not working properly. When it is turned on and after it goes through its start up routine, there is a horizontal line across the top of the screen and a figure ("15 m" – presume 15 metres) shown on the bottom of the screen. It remains that way no matter what, regardless of the depth, speed etc. It definitely doesn’t show the contour of the sea floor or any fish etc. I sometimes use the boat in shallow water and the sounder would be a real help.
The transducer is mounted under the transom.
The diagnostic system shows the transducer is connected. Someone mentioned to me that there should be a film of oil (?) under the transducer. Is this true?How can I test the transducer?

    I had some questions about my humminbird fish finder/depth sounder. I called Humminbird and they were very friendly and answered all my questions. I also ordered some parts from them and they were reasonably priced and arrived promptly.
    You can find their contact info, troubleshooting tips and a downloadable user manual for your unit here;

    I wouldn’t hesitate to call their technical support people if you can’t sort out the problem after downloading and reading the user manual.
    I’ve never heard of oiling a transducer lol.. but I know that if you use an inside the hull transducer they recommend a special epoxy.
    Good luck!
